The George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering (NEES) is pleased to offer unique opportunities this summer for outstandingundergraduate students to participate in state-of-the-art research at eight of the NEES laboratory sites (UC San Diego, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, Oregon State, U. Nevada Reno, Illinois, Lehigh and Buffalo).


Participants will work with faculty and graduate students onexciting NEES projects on topics ranging from tsunami driven debris to soil-foundation-structure-interaction to structural performance.  The ten-week 2012 NEES REU Program will immerse undergraduate students in engineering analysis and laboratory experimentation, as well as introduce students to the benefits of continuing on to graduate studies. Students will also attend the 2012 NEES Annual Meeting in Boston in July and a Young Researchers Symposium at

Stanford University in August.

Each participant will receive a stipend of $5,000, intended to cover summer housing and travel expenses to the summer project location. NEES will provide additional compensation for travel to the 2012 NEES Annual Meeting and the Young Researchers Symposium.

The first application deadline is Monday, March 5, 2012 at 8:00 AM Pacific Time. Application review will begin on March 5 and continue on a rolling basis until all internships are awarded. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply before the March 5th deadline.

As part of an NSF Project, Keri Ryan and I are putting together an Undergraduate Earthquake Reconnaissance Team with members from around the US. The attached flyer describes the program. We are looking for Junior and Senior undergraduate students who are interested in being a part of the program. We would greatly appreciate it if you could forward this announcement to the students at your institution and/or post copies of the flyer in your department. The 2012-2013 ASDSO Undergraduate Scholarship includes a prize of up to $10,000, awarded to undergraduates planning to graduate in 2013.

Los Angeles Section Geotechnical Engineering Technical Group/Geo-Institute Los Angeles Chapter Scholarship 2011.

The Geotechnical Engineering Technical Group of the ASCE Los Angeles Section/Geo-Institute Los Angeles Chapter is pleased to offer a scholarship directed to undergraduate seniors planning to enroll in a graduate-level geotechnical program in Fall 2011 and continuing graduate students.  The scholarship is intended to recognize past achievement and career growth potential of students interested in pursuing a career in geotechnical engineering.
