Message from the President
Welcome to the Cal Poly Society of Civil Engineers (SCE)! As a student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), we provide a link between the classroom and the professional world. SCE is a really a tool for the student’s that helps them in developing new skills, or enhancing those learned at Cal Poly, through the many different opportunities we present throughout the year. There are so many exciting things we do as a chapter that there is definitely something that you are going to enjoy; whether it be a hands on civil engineering project, teaching children about engineering, cleaning up San Luis Obispo, experiencing the construction site, or just relaxing and having a good time (among many other activities) all while developing relations with professional engineers. Last year we placed 2nd in the Pacific Southwest Conference, 3rd in the National Steel Bridge Competition, and 1st (for the third consecutive year) in the National Concrete Canoe Competition. This tradition of success is only possible through the support of the members; it is the members who win these competitions, we create our own success. Because of our member participation, we were also recognized as a Robert Ridgway Finalist, demonstrating that we are among the best student chapters in the nation. Of course, this feat would not have been possible without the dedication of all our amazing members.
As we start a new school year, we will continue our chapter’s success and traditions, providing the most we can for each other, giving back to the community that has helped us foster such a great education, and keeping plenty active. Through our huge career fair, entertaining speakers at meetings, plethora of field trips, and loads of exciting events we will definitely have a tremendously fun year; really, how could you not with this group of people? There’s more to engineering than just calculations. Let’s get out and experience all that engineering has to offer over this next year as part of the best organization on campus!
-Jazz Gilbert, SCE President
